Healthier, Homemade Hot Chocolate

Updated: Dec 5, 2025

When it comes to dark chocolate, I am a fan! And, the greater the intensity, the better!

Now that it is finally starting to feel a bit chillier, I plan on keeping a homemade hot chocolate recipe on hand. This helps me not rely on store bought mixes that are full of unwanted ingredients. But, I still get to enjoy the ease of warming up some almond milk and adding a few tablespoons of chocolatey goodness while I wind down from the day.

Did you know that cacao is rich in antioxidants and minerals? It is a delicious way to support heart and brain health. As well as helping to replenish iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper. And, it helps boost your mood.

In the spring, I plan on adding several products to what I sell at the Waxahachie Farmer's Market. These will include new tea blends (teas will also be available online), fermented sodas, and other gut nourishing products. And then, by next winter season, I will add my hot chocolate to the mix. But for now, I want to share my recipe with you.

Need:

A large mason jar with lid

Measuring cup and spoons

Ingredients List:

Organic Cacao Powder

Organic Coconut Sugar

Organic Cinnamon

Organic Nutmeg

Sea Salt

To Make Mix:

1 cup of cacao powder

2/3 cup of coconut sugar

(You can adjust sugar to 1 cup if you prefer something sweeter)

1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon of sea salt

Shake up all ingredients in your jar and store in a cool, dark place. It should be good for 4 to 6 months.

To enjoy:

Warm up about 8 oz of your milk of choice (I prefer almond). Add 2 tbsp of hot chocolate mix and whisk. You can also add a splash of vanilla, peppermint, and/or cayenne pepper if you prefer. You may also add dark chocolate shavings for an extra creamy treat. And, on those days where you notice that you are holding on to stress responses, add 1/4 tsp of magnesium glycinate powder (or break open a capsule and add) to help clear your body (and get a good night's sleep).

Then find a cozy spot by the Christmas tree, take in the warmth, the delightful smell, and the soft glow of the lights, and enjoy!
