This past week, I was privileged to be a vendor at an event sponsored by Erb Family Wellness. They were so informative about how allergies are developed and the dangers of relying on over-the-counter allergy medicine. They also laid out a detailed plan on how to heal from our ever increasing, overactive allergic responses. If this speaks to you, you can get more information about their clinic at https://www.erbfamilywellness.com
One of the things mentioned that stood out to me was, "Unaddressed allergies become auto-immune issues later in life." The reason it spoke to me is because I have experienced this myself. I remember trying to piece together the overwhelming information given when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia in my 30's. I didn't seek traditional medicine long because they could not tell me how to get well. Instead, I ended up at the Environmental Health Center of Dallas and got the help I needed through "alternative medicine." Although I didn't fully understand it at the time, I remember connecting the dots between my acute allergy/asthma issues as a child and the auto-immune issues that presented themselves in my adulthood. Over the past year, I have worked hard at regaining my health again. Thankfully, this time, I had a foundation to build upon as new light has been shed upon my specific health issues. However, the one thing that has remained constant is that unpacking the effects of environmental stress is key to recovery!
Obviously, drinking a cup of tea is not a magic pill. Being a good steward of our health requires us to learn how our modern conveniences are affecting our bodies, and then to committ to making the lifestyle changes that are needed. And, there are usually multiple layers to uncover. With that said, drinking 3 to 4 cups of herbal tea a day is something to consider. Herbal blends truly do help with a variety of health concerns. But as always, do your research before adding any health regime (natural or otherwise), and it is important that you educate yourself concerning your own health needs.
With that in mind, one of the things addressed at the Allergy Clinic was the use of Quercetin and Vitamin C in the place of over-the-counter antihistamines. Quercitin is a natural compound found in fruits and vegetables that helps support healthy immune function. And, guess what! A good source of quercetin is rooibos tea.
Here are some other proposed benefits of adding a cup of Blissful Blue (our rooibos blend) to your daily routine:
Rooibos leaf comes from a region in South Africa. It can be described as a combination of sweet and smoky flavors. Most people who deal with chronic inflammation tend toward sinus conditions. Rooibos tea has the anti-inflammatory properties of our other teas, with the added bonus of supporting clear sinus passages. The polyphenols found in hibiscus, apples, blueberries, and elderberries may help balance inflammatory responses. And currants contain anthocyanins, which are said to give your immune system a boost. Cornflower petals have been used for centuries as they are thought to increase blood flow allowing for healthier skin and hair. They also are high in anthocyanins and flavonoids that may help combat oxidative stress.
I am truly thankful that I found answers in my younger life that I can build upon today. And, that this knowledge might help someone else who may also be starting down this path and feels a bit overwhelmed. Change doesn't happen overnight. And, you don't have to have all the answers at once. But, making small adjustments, one at a time, just might bring about surprising results.
